1. Start With Gratitude

As soon as you open your eyes, think of 3 things you are grateful for (or better yet, have a pen & paper close to your bed and write them down). This can be anything, big or small. Think: having running water, a roof over your head, good friendships, a job, 4 working limbs to exercise, or achieving a goal you had set out to accomplish. Each day try to think of 3 different things you are thankful for. This practice is incredibly easy to do, but has a big impact on your mood & approach towards the day ahead.

2. Make Your Bed

One of the easiest ways to set a productive tone for your day, is to make your bed as soon as you get up. It’s a simple task but allows you to accomplish a goal first thing in the morning, building your motivation and pushing you forward.

3. Drink Water

Drinking water in the morning, before eating anything, is a great way to purify your system and rehydrate your cells. If you want to turn the health meter up a notch further, add lemon to a glass or two of warm water, instead of a cold serving. Warm lemon water helps to jump start your digestive system and there is even evidence that it regulates metabolism, helping maintain a healthy weight (score!).

4. Stretch

During or after drinking your water, do a quick stretch or workout. Especially if you'll be sitting at a computer for most of the day, making time for movement in the morning is very important. Even a few minutes of stretching helps to release tension in the body from the night before and sends endorphins (aka 'feel-good' chemicals) throughout your entire body.

5. Carve Out Time For Breakfast

Your brain needs fuel to function throughout the day and breakfast is an essential part of that. Start your day with a balanced, healthy meal and eat it slowly. If this means you have to wake up 15 minutes earlier - do it! You’ll be surprised at how much better you feel when you allow yourself enough time eat calmly, without being rushed.

6. Meditate

If you really want to jump start your morning routine, set aside a few minutes to meditate before hoping onto your computer or leaving for work. This practice, if done consistently, allows you to become more mindful in all of your life decisions, increases focuses and reduces stress. For tips on how to get started with meditation, click here.

7. Write Out Your Goals For The Day

Now that you’ve prepped your brain and body for success, it’s time to get to business. Although it's common to write out HUGE to-do lists, this habit can actually be counterproductive, by causing feelings of overwhelm and unmotivation. That's why for your morning routine, it's best to keep your goal list short and sweet.

Write down the top 3-5 priorities for the day that you must get done, in order of importance. This simple exercise will help you feel more organized, confident and focused before diving in. (Note: You should have a place on your computer or in your planner where you can write down tasks and ideas throughout the day, so that you don't forget them. However, try to keep them separate from your daily goals, so you can stay focused on the most important tasks at hand for the day).

8. Eat Your Frog First

Once you have your priorities laid out for the day, tackle your toughest task first. As Bryan Tracy says in his famous book, 'Eat That Frog!', one of the best ways to boost productivity is to do the things you don't necessarily enjoy, but need to be completed, first. These tasks, when ignored, can send your day into a spiral of inaction and frustration. Stop procrastination dead in its tracks by getting the 'Frog' out of the way first thing. Once you get the most un-enjoyable task out of the way, you'll feel accomplished & have the rest of the day to spend doing tasks you actually enjoy.

*Pro Tip - Keep your phone on airplane mode throughout your morning routine (at least until you start your to-do list). This will allow you to be present and to set a calm tone for the rest of your day.

What is your morning routine like? Do you have any tips or tricks that you use to boost your motivation and productivity? We’d love to hear them!
