8 Tricks To Stay Sane During The Holiday Season

The holidays are just around the corner and while this may be an exciting time for some, it can feel like an overwhelming storm for others.

Here are 8 ways to beat the stress and enjoy a happy, healthy, holiday season.

Tip #1: Plan Ahead

One of the main reasons that we get stressed out during the holidays is because we are unprepared, and our responsibilities - with work, family and friends - all seem to happen at once.

How to beat the stress:

Write out a list of people that you’re planning to give gifts to and potential options for each person.

Try looking online for the things you can buy in advance, so you’ll have presents prepared weeks before Christmas.

This strategy goes for your time commitments as well. Get out your planner or calendar and write out all of the family parties, work events and social gatherings that you may have to attend in the next month or so. Once you have it written out, you’ll feel much more in control of your time and energy.

Tip #2: Schedule Quiet Time For Yourself

Finding space in your day to reflect, relax and unwind is crucial during the holiday season. Remember that taking time for yourself isn't selfish, it’s actually one of the most important things you can do to be a better friend, partner or family member.

How to beat the stress:

Take a walk in the park during your lunch break, do some meditation, or read a book, instead of scrolling through your phone before you to go to sleep. Find something that helps you to clear your mind and regain balance, and do it each day.

Tip #3: Get Enough Sleep

During the winter months, your immune system is a bit more fragile, so sleeping is an absolute necessity. Now, we know that it can be tempting to stay up all night to knock out a project for work or catch up with friends, however, you’ll be much more productive and efficient during the day if you make beauty rest a priority.

How to beat the stress:

Aim for 7-9 hours a night and try to go to sleep around the same time each night. Obviously things will come up, so don’t stress if you can’t get to bed right on time, but aim for a regular schedule to keep your metabolism, mood and health on track.

Tip #4: Learn To Say No

Not everyone will plan their projects, parties and events in advance, which could lead to last minute invites for you.

How to beat the stress:

If your schedule is packed and you’re beginning to feel overwhelmed, you can say no, without feeling guilty! If it’s a friend’s party, explain to them that you’re feeling stressed and you need to take a break so you don't get sick or burnt out. If they care about you, they will understand.

Tip #5: Avoid Toxic People

There are people in some of our lives that carry negative energy by constantly complaining, arguing or being unsupportive. Energy is contagious and during the holiday season, it’s vital that you surround yourself with only those who are going to lift you up.

How to beat the stress:

If you have friends or family members who bring you down, but you feel obligated to see them regularly, make plans where you won’t spend the whole day together. Have a legitimate exit strategy, and tell them about it beforehand.

If a friend or co-worker starts complaining to you, brush it off and try to change the subject to something more positive and fun. We will do an entire post on dealing with toxic people in your life, but during this season, aim to reduce the time spent with them as much as possible :)

Tip #6: Choose Healthy (Most Of The Time!)

With the constant parties and get togethers, the holiday season is almost synonymous with unhealthy food and drinks. Now, we aren’t suggesting that you skip the indulgences all together (we aren't saints either ;)). However, too much of a bad thing can impact your mood, sleep patterns and overall wellbeing.

How to beat the stress:

If you know you’re going to a party where there will be only unhealthy options, try filling up on something healthy first. This way you'll be much less likely to binge out on cheese, chips and desserts.

Also, if you know you'll be having a couple drinks at a party, try to have 1 glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you consume. This will keep you hydrated, helping you to feel much better the following day.

Tip #7: Make Time For Exercise

Time can get away from us during the holiday season and finding time for exercise can be difficult. However, even 15-30 minutes of exercise releases endorphins, boosting your mood and releasing stress.

How to beat the stress:

Look ahead at your calendar at the beginning of each week and schedule in your workouts. If your week looks busy, you may have to modify your workouts to be shorter than normal or to be completed at home, which is totally fine! Still write them in your planner and treat them like a mandatory meeting.

On the days where you can’t spare a minute, add as much activity into your day as possible. Go for a brisk walk on breaks at work, take the stairs instead of the elevator, stretch while waiting in line etc. Even these short bursts of movement will help you feel reenergized and focused.

Tip #8: Phone A Friend

Even if you’ve done your planning and you think you’ve got the holiday season covered, unexpected stresses can occur and you may get frustrated.

How to beat the stress:

Have someone on speed dial that you can turn to when things get a little overwhelming. Phone a friend or family member that you can vent to, and who will remind you what is really important about the holiday season.
