Posted: Nov 17 2015
You may already be using coconut oil in your smoothies, stir-fry dinners and other recipes, but did you also know you can save some serious cash and rid your beauty regimen of harmful chemicals by switching to coconut oil for your hair, skin, nails and face?
We dug a little deeper to discover the Top 10 Ways to Use Coconut Oil, outside of the kitchen.
1. Shaving Cream -
Most traditional shaving creams are expensive and contain tons of harmful chemicals. Coconut oil on the other hand is inexpensive and naturally moisturizing, making it the perfect substitute.
Pro Tip: Run the jar under warm water to soften the oil before shaving.
2. Body Moisturizer -
Due to its naturally anti-bacterial and hydrating properties, coconut oil makes an all-star moisturizer for everyday use. Rub as much oil as you need over your entire body and allow a couple minutes for it to soak into your skin before putting clothes back on. Your skin will feel soft, nourished and you'll smell like you just stepped out of a week in the sun kissed tropics.
3. Teeth Whitener -
Swish a tablespoon of coconut oil around in your mouth for 15-20 minutes in the morning, before eating or drinking anything, and then spit it in the trash can. Wash your mouth out with warm water and then brush your teeth. It sounds a bit weird, we know, BUT, once you get used to the process, you'll see some real amazing benefits. Studies have shown (and we can testify) that coconut oil removes toxins from the mouth to give you a you a whiter, brighter smile. Plus, some even swear it helps reduce the effects of a hangover, but that’s just what we’ve heard ;)
Pro Tip: Follow this up with a glass of warm lemon water to jump start your metabolism in the morning.
4. Make Up Remover -
Use a pea size amount of oil to remove an entire days worth of makeup (yes, even waterproof mascara!). For best results, massage a dollop of liquified oil onto your skin and then rinse with warm water.
5. Body Scrub -
This is perfect for a DIY spa night in. Forget the pricey store-bought brands and swap in some coconut oil mixed with some sugar or salt for an affordable, effective scrub. Simply heat up 1/2 cup of coconut oil and mix with 1 cup of sugar or salt and stir. This scrub will moisturize your skin while removing dead skin cells, giving you a younger, more radiant appearance.
6. For Glowing Hands And Nails -
Who doesn't want more youthful looking hands and nails? Coconut oil is the perfect way to show your hands some extra love, especially during the winter months. Have a jar handy to use as moisturizer, whenever they start to feel dry. To hydrate and strengthen the skin around you nails, simply swipe a small amount of oil onto each of your cuticles and allow it to sink in.
7. Natural Face Highlighter -
If you’re looking for a way to achieve a glowing, fresh face, coconut oil may be your new found love! After applying your makeup, dab a tiny bit of oil on your cheekbones and above your eyebrows for a hydrated, fresh look.
8. Deep Conditioner -
Coconut oil is great for preventing protein loss in the hair and adding moisture back into your dry locks. Add a generous amount of liquefied oil to wet hair, after shampooing, and then twist your hair into a bun. Leave it in for 5-10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. You can also leave the oil in your hair overnight, for an extra boost of hydration, but be sure to sleep with a towel over your pillow or a shower cap to soak up any excess moisture.
9. Eye Cream -
Most eye creams are extremely expensive, so if you’re looking for a way to cut back on your beauty costs, use coconut oil for the sensitive skin under your eyes. This cream is a natural anti-inflammatory and as we’ve mentioned, it’s extremely moisturizing, helping to eliminate puffiness and dark circles under your eyes.
10. Massage Oil -
Massage your sore muscles (or convince a generous friend to assist :)) with some coconut oil. As a cheaper alternative than most massage oils you can buy from the store, and with no chemicals - coconut oil makes an ideal base for a relaxing, hydrating massage.
